Kingston was one of only three Canadian stops on Naomi Punk’s tour last fall, and that includes a show in Toronto where the plug got pulled three songs in. They had a real nice time here, so they’re coming back. Since their Artel show last August they’ve sold out of their most excellent LP “The Feeling” and had it reissued by Captured Tracks (Mac Demarco, Wild Nothing, DIIV, etc.). So if you got one at that first show, it’s special now. If you didn’t, you’ve got a second chance.

In keeping with this show’s theme of “special,” very special band Hand will play some of their very special aggro-jams. But also, oh jeez this is special, this show will feature the debut of brand new Kingston band Doug.

This poetry series’ ambition - held in an inviting, warm, accepting and acoustically sound “safe” space - is to offer a compassionate setting for poets to come and share their work - and for others to relax, support and absorb. As I have mentioned before, the spoken word does indeed add another dimension to the written word that is, at times, almost magical.

Those participating may be reading from their own work or other’s work, singing (with or even without an instrument), reading work done on a poet/poetic era or perhaps even original prose - and hey who knows. The only real restriction is time limit, determined by the number of people signing to read - but in the past each reader has had roughly 8 to 10 minutes, give or take.

This month’s reading, scheduled for Tuesday, July 6th at the Artel (corner of Queen and Sydenham Sts.), will run from 7:00 to 10:00pm, with a short intermission part way through and with limited food and beverage provided. It is also a free event, but donations are greatly appreciated and will be given directly to the Artel for providing their space and their assistance.

This is an open event so feel free to invite or bring friends as well. Each reading has had a number of people come to support someone they know who is reading, or simply to come to listen and watch - and enjoy.

Although the start time is 7pm, this is not a closed door event and anyone is welcome to come in at any time during the reading, either to read or to listen. I will attempt to accomodate poets arriving late wishing to read. If you are intending to read and know in advance that you will be late - let me know and I will make sure your name is included on the list for later in the evening

The Artel announces eight exhibition opportunities in 2008 under the title WELCOME HERE !

Call for Submissions
Deadline for proposals: January 7, 2008

This call is open to proposals from emerging artists currently or formally living in Kingston Ontario and the surrounding communities, and is also open to artists with other kinds of connections to the Greater Kingston area.

This exhibition series is scheduled to begin February 2008 and end November 2008. Those selected receive a 3-week exhibition slot in the Artel’s 530 sq/foot gallery, at no charge. Promotion, administration, installation assistance and gallery volunteers are all included. Some charges may apply for an opening reception. Proposals will be selected by The Artel Collective according to the artistic merit of the work.

As part of the project, The Artel Collective will host two public dinners, which the artists are requested to attend to contribute to discussion on ‘life as an artist in Kingston’.

THE ARTEL is a non-profit, community-based artist collective and artist’s residence located in Kingston, Ontario. Run by a volunteer group of 12 artists and community players, The Artel Collective is committed to supporting emerging artists practicing in a variety of media, including: visual and media arts, performance, installation, music, curatorial, community, activist and interdisciplinary work.

As a venue THE ARTEL is unique; equipped with a public gallery space on the first floor of an artist house. THE ARTEL encourages collaborative relationships between artists, between artists and institutions, and between artists and members of the Kingston community-at-large. THE ARTEL seeks to support diversity within Kingston’s arts scene, and welcomes involvement from a wide and overlapping range of artistic disciplines, approaches and interests.
