Wanting to get more involved at the Artel and don’t know how?
We are looking for artists and art enthusiasts to move in to the Artel in September!
The Artel is a lived-in artist collective which functions both as a home and community art space in Kingston. Three of our six rooms are available for September: Room 1: $368.53 / 93 square feet, Room 2: $429.87 / 231 square feet, Room 3: $522 / 240 square feet. Rooms are partially furnished. If living in and contributing to this dynamic space appeals to you, email us at the.artel@gmail.com with a letter of intent outlining 1)why you want to live at The Artel, 2) how you can contribute to this collective, 3) your artistic/community involvement/background, 4) examples of your work, if applicable.
Do I have to be an artist to live at the Artel?
You don’t have to be an “artist.” You do have to be excited about facilitating arts and creativity in our space and community!
What is living at the Artel like?
There are ongoing activities such as live concerts, poetry readings and exhibitions throughout the year. We have weekly meetings in which we program these events. You will meet lots of creative and interesting people and you will be one of the people who makes exciting things happen in Kingston. None of our tasks are strictly delegated, rather we work on the principle that we all know how to do everything, but some of us work more on music, or art, or administration. When one of us is busy, the others step in.
What are the perks?
Attending amazing concerts for free! And all music has to be over by 11pm, so you can still get up for work/school in the morning. We have a piano! We have one of those four-colour screenprinting registration machines and a bunch of photography dark room equipment just waiting to be used! Great neighbours and an amazing location right downtown.
Am I right for the Artel?
Don’t think that what you do is what the Artel does? All the better! What the Artel does is up to what the collective wants to do, and we will be all the stronger for diversity in our members, programming and skills!

Want to lend a hand and have a reason to hang around more often?
There are lots of ways to get involved with The Artel. Three of the most popular are:
- Gallery Sitting - when an exhibit is up in the gallery, we’d love extra help watching the space and greeting visitors. Shifts range from 2.5 to 5 hours, Thurs - Sun.
- Event Hosting - from time to time our concerts, screenings and other events require some extra help with hospitality. Often this can get you in free to the show, which is a great perk.
- Postering - like to walk or bike around town? How about putting up some Artel posters while you get your daily exercise? Also, a great way to stay informed on what else Kingston has to offer.
Perks for volunteering include: good karma, an extended family of artist friends, occasional discounts to selected events!
How: Just send an email to the.artel@gmail.com to learn more about what volunteering opportunities are coming up.

Open up
Interiors of Space and Mind
2007 Union Gallery Mini-works Silent Auction
The Union Gallery invites you to contribute to the 2007 Mini-Works Silent Auction fundraiser, which will be on display from October through November.
The theme this year is “interiors” and you are encouraged to creatively interpret it on an 8″x10″ canvas (available at the gallery). You might want to approach the topic from a psychological point of view (memory, dreams, imagination – whatever you might associate with the “interior” of the mind), a spatial point of view (significant places, architecture, public/personal interior spaces), or maybe you’ll want to explore the relationship between the mind and the different spaces it encounters.
Canvases can be picked up from the Union Gallery during its hours of operation:
Tues-Thurs 11:00am-5:00pm
Fri-Sat 11:00am-4:30pm.
Please note that the first submission deadline is August 1st – however, for students who are not in Kingston until the beginning of the school year, some canvases will be reserved until September. The number of canvases is limited, so they will be made available on a first come first serve basis.
Thank you for your support!
