In 1966, the American recording artist Bob Dylan died in a motorcycle accident. His audience, however, refused to let him go. By wishing really hard, and by clapping their hands together, boys and girls of all ages were able to give life again to Dylan gone to ashes, like the Golem.

Forty years later, the Artel presents the exhibition “Jewels and Binoculars.” Bob’s children have grown in size and number, and now that the applause is so great, Dylan can die again and live eternally. Some of these children have produced the various artworks exhibited in “Jewels and Binoculars,” in memory of Bob. Bob is dead. Long live Bob.

Participating artists include: Michael Davidge, Isaac Gillis, Wendy Huot, Jeremy Mulder, Aly Ogasian, Chantal Rousseau (Toronto, ON), Lisa Visser, Lucie Claire Whitehead (Victoria, BC), Daniel Wong (Lethbridge, AB). With special appearances by, amongst others, Daniel Saunders.

The Artel Requests Silent Support

The Artel is pleased to announce the presentation of its first silent auction fundraiser at the Sleepless Goat Café and Worker’s Cooperative (91 Princess Street). On display are original works donated by some of the city’s most innovative and talented contemporary artists. Bids will be accepted for all works from now until 4:00pm on Saturday December 22nd at which time, bidding will close and the highest bidder will be declared the winner of the work.

The artists who have donated their original paintings, prints, and photographs to the silent auction include a mix of emerging and established local visual artists such as: M.P. Tully, William Weedmark, Irina Skvortsova, Melinda Richka, Sharon Muilwyk, Cameron Tomsett, Brent Nurse, Isaac Gillis, Aida Sulcs, Rebecca Soudant, Klaudio Shita, Gjen Snider, Sandra Jass, Lisa Visser, Ben Nelson, and Don Maynard.

There will be an informal meet and greet with a number of the artists at the Sleepless Goat on Monday December 17th between 7-9pm.

All proceeds from the auction will support the Artel’s activities as one of the most exciting, vibrant, and dynamic arts presentation organizations in the city. Located in a 6 bedroom house at 205 Sydenham St., the Artel Arts Accommodation and Venue houses 6 artists in live/work spaces as well as a gallery and event venue.

Run by a collective of the house’s tenants and a group of community members, the Artel collective believes that artistic partnership and collaboration provide the best support to the development of excellence in emerging artists, particularly where such efforts include the public presentation of artwork in the form of exhibitions and events. By welcoming the involvement of artists from multiple disciplines and levels of achievement, and presenting art for the purposes of interpretation and enjoyment by the community, The Artel fosters diversity and accessibility that help to create the best possible environment for artistic growth.
