Exhibit/Residency: Isabel’s Antidote by artist Jessica MacCormack

July 19th, 2007
August 1, 2007 toAugust 19, 2007

Isabel’s Antidote by artist Jessica MacCormack
Workshops: 11, 12 August 2007
Closing Reception: 18 August 2007

From August 1st until the 22nd, Modern Fuel will be sponsoring the first residency for a visiting artist at the Artel Arts Accommodation and Venue, located at 205 Sydenham St. in downtown Kingston. An artist working in performance, installation and video, Jessica MacCormack will reside at the Artel and work collaboratively with the Kingston community for a concurrent exhibition in the Artel Gallery. MacCormack’s practice examines the function of art in society and explores the potential ways the artistic process can be used to build community or heal conflict.

During her residency, MacCormack will address the controversial decision to close Kingston’s Isabel McNeill House, the only minimum security facility in Canada for federally sentenced women. The inmates of the Isabel McNeill House are able to live in a residential setting as they are reintegrated with the community.

In the Artel gallery MacCormack will present Isabel’s Antidote, an exhibition showcasing collaborative projects based on the stories and concerns surrounding the Isabel McNeill House through engagement with the women involved and with the broader Kingston community.

MacCormack is inviting community members to be involved with the production of improvised narratives to be workshopped on the 11th and 12th of August with the aim of producing a video for the exhibition. For those interested in participating, please contact Modern Fuel.

Gallery Hours for this project will begin on Thursday August 2nd and end on Sunday August 19th 2007. The space will be open to the public Thurs, Fri- 2-7pm and Sat, Sun- 11-4pm

Artist’s bio:
MacCormack received her BFA from Concordia University in Montreal in 2003. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Public Art and New Artistic Strategies at the Bauhaus University in Germany. Her practice focuses on the interactive nature of art, staging performances and re-enactments of a participatory nature.

kyra tully

Kyra and Tully have been a long time coming. Like a beacon of love guiding us through a troubled world, Kyra and Tully’s music is set to inspire the next generation of bright-eyed lovers. Their music provides a lifeline to the tradition of the duo superstars of the 60s and 70s. Sprouting new melodies in the trail blazed by those real-life couple predecessors, Kyra and Tully are not themselves new to the world of music. Fixtures on the Kingston music scene, they have been doing their thing locally on their own terms, regularly jamming and performing with some of Kingston’s best-known homegrown talent.

darling

Those who have seen Montreal’s the Darling DeMaes live have tried to pin them to an eclectic range of acts, revealing not so much their likeness, but difference. Some hear shades of Belle & Sebastian, others Pavement, the Shins, the Pixies, Radiohead or even ‘60s echoes of the Beatles, the Ronettes, and Paul Simon. The Darling DeMaes have a sound that’s precise, unique and evocative of their collective creative minds filled with irony, naivety, and bittersweet nostalgia… and an incomparable sensibility for delicate and complex melodies.
