STATE GREETINGS

22 August – 29 September 2007
Ceremony and Reception: 15 September 2007

Robert Jelinek (Vienna, Austria), State of Sabotage (SoS)
Mark Prier (Corner Brook, Newfoundland & Labrador), NOMADSLAND
Gjen Snider (Kingston, Ontario), Guest Curator

“Art as state is a direct form of independent state art.”
- Robert Jelinek, SoS

“Nomadsland is an Independent State of Mind, existing as all states do: within the imagination.”
- Mark Prier, Nomadsland

The work of both Prier and Jelinek define ‘the state’ as a subversive idea with unique value to assess the effects of ideology on modern society. STATE GREETINGS takes a platform to observe the social, cultural, and political phenomenon of Micronations: small entities that resemble, behave as, and sometimes parody independent nations or states. Impervious to their lack of recognition by world governments or major international organisations, micronational projects present creative, original and often favorable opportunities for consideration of alternative political policy and the conditions and possibilities of unconventional agency. In this exhibition, two micronations - State of Sabotage and Nomadsland, are explored as culturally viable and symbolic of grassroots political ideals and artistic self-determination, which also demonstrate clear relationships to contemporary global conditions.

Ceremony and Reception: 15 September 2007

The Artel is looking for volunteers!

September 11th, 2007

Want to lend a hand and have a reason to hang around more often?
There are lots of ways to get involved with The Artel. Three of the most popular are:

  1. Gallery Sitting - when an exhibit is up in the gallery, we’d love extra help watching the space and greeting visitors. Shifts range from 2.5 to 5 hours, Thurs - Sun.
  2. Event Hosting - from time to time our concerts, screenings and other events require some extra help with hospitality. Often this can get you in free to the show, which is a great perk.
  3. Postering - like to walk or bike around town? How about putting up some Artel posters while you get your daily exercise? Also, a great way to stay informed on what else Kingston has to offer.

Perks for volunteering include: good karma, an extended family of artist friends, occasional discounts to selected events!

How: Just send an email to the.artel@gmail.com to learn more about what volunteering opportunities are coming up.

26 years ago Jenn was born in a brown house in PEI. A few years later she started making funny sounds and eventually strung enough words together to write her first song. Many songs and one EP later Jenn is now working on her first full length that she has been invited to record with the CBC. ORCHESTRA FOR THE MOON (produced by Jason MacIsaac and David Christensen of The Heavy Blinkers) features such notable guests as Ron Sexsmith, Jill Barber, Matt Mays, Tyler Messick, Dale Murray, and Rose Cousins. Grant toured Europe this year with the pop orchestral band The Heavy Blinkers and as a solo artist, played the Toronto Film Festival and was asked to open for Feist & Josh Ritter. Jenn has also been fortunate enough to share the stage in intimate venues on several occasions with Julie Doiron as well as Ron Sexmith. Most recently, Jenn completed a three week tour of Germany, and is currently organizing tour dates to support her upcoming release.
