Unrest has yet to cover “Teenage Suicide” by the fictional new wave band Big Fun, but they are about to.

Heathers lifts the cynically romantic fin-de-Me-Decade American spirit of the Replacement for whom its high school is named and forces you to laugh at yourself for thinking how terrible everything was and is and will forever be.

“Porter is a Toronto-based visual genius who, in the ’60s and ’70s, fully extended the artistic possibilities of Super-8. You will not believe the analog awesomeness of these antique-format experiments.” - Time Out Magazine, New York City

John Porter is a filmmaker, photographer, performer, and writer. Since 1968 he has made over 300 films on super 8, 8mm & 16mm. On Monday November 10, John Porter will present some of his works live at the Artel - admission is free and open to the public.

John loves to meet fellow Super 8 aficionados, so bring your equipment to show it off.

About John Porter:

Using film as a visual art like painting, many of his short films are silent, made in series’ (Camera Dances, crowd portraits, local histories, rituals, toy stories), and he shows his originals (no copies). While projecting some he performs live in the audience, in front of the screen, or while hand-holding the small projector for “surround super 8″ in galleries and for projecting onto passing people and vehicles while “film-busking” on the street at night. His films are dynamic, humourous and revealing, enjoyed by people of all ages.

He has been actively involved with several artist-run centres in Toronto since 1978, including serving many years on Boards of Directors. He’s been most consistently involved with The Funnel Experimental Film Theatre (1977-1989), Pleasure Dome Artists Film Exhibition Group (since 1989) and CineCycle (since 1991). Throughout the 1980s he organized many Monthly Open Film Screenings at The Funnel and A Space Gallery, and made and projected super 8 films with the band Fifth Column. More recently, he co-organized Monthly Open Screenings at CineCycle for 31 consecutive months (2004-2006).

An exhibit that touches on the empowerment and disintegration of memory

by local artists, Bruce Kauffman, Andrew Sims, and Lee-Ann Taras

This is an exhibit about time passing, loss, starting again, collecting memories, trying to forget, celebrating. The exhibit itself is challenging in many ways since it empowers for the artists some aspects of their lives that are difficult to remember. It reflects the ease of forgetting, the difficulty that comes with forgetting, as well as the celebration of memory and the survival tools that memory can give to us.

History is a collection of memories. Although this exhibit reflects history on a microscopic scale reflecting very personal impressions of memory and human habit with how we deal with memory, the exhibit may cause us to ask basic questions aobut what we remember and what we have forgotten?

This exhibit speaks loudly aobut responsible remembering even when it can be difficult. These artists have taken the more difficult path of representing what is actually real.They do this by using old images, words and finding new ways to exhbit and reflect — re-collect.

Lee-Ann Taras grew up in Prince Edward County and has made Kingston, Ontario home for twenty years. She obtained a degree in psychology before later studying drawing, painting and sculpture. Taras has followed various career paths in social work and the arts. She has been studying, making, exhibiting and selling art since 1994. Taras is a member of the Kingston Arts Council, Organization of Kingston Women Artists, Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre and CARFAC Ontario. She also is the Art Program Coordinator for the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Bruce Kauffman moved to Kingston in 2001. He began writing poetry while attending university but became quite passionate about writing in the mid 1990’s. He hosted a weekly poetry series in a college/university setting from 1995 - 1997 and has participated in numerous poetry readings. His work has been included several compilations and anthologies, and his chapbook “Seed” was published in 2005.

Andrew Sims is a Kingston based artist. He attended Queen’s and St. Lawrence College. He has shown at the Verb Gallery and the Kingston Public Library. He has also exhibited his work in a group show in Toronto.
