Bio: Karilynn Ming Ho has completed her MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver BC
she completed her BFA with Distinction in Media Arts and Digital Technologies at ACAD, Alberta. She has participated in many performances, group shows as well as screenings throughout Canada.
Of her work Karilynn says, “My work is performance, existing through live actions, photographs, installation, sculpture and video. My work addresses philosophical and conceptual ideas around performativity. I am interested in a notion of performance that oscillates between structural and scripted forms, such as cinema and theatre and the unscripted: improvisation, social role-playing and exhibitionism.”
Her video installation at the Artel, Version 1,2,3 is a video installation that examines the relationship between performance and the lens in the staging and re-framing of events. the work begins with a series of improvisations by two people performing themselves in front of a camera (Version 1). using the documentation obtained from these improvisations as a ’script’, these moments are re-staged theatrically using actors, objects, props and a minimal set and re-mediated back onto video (Version 2 and 3). The work examines the concept of ‘performance’ one that continues on through its potential reiteration through different structural tropes and through different bodies that take on these roles and situations.
Exhibition begins Thursday Feb 10 - Feb 28. Reception Feb 18, 7-9 pm

Poetry Night is coming up again, as per usual every first Tuesday of the month.
Below, read a message from Bruce, the organizer.
February’s reading will be the twenty second in this reading series - and my sincere thanks to all who have attended in the past, as poets sharing and as guests coming to support those reading or to simply relax and absorb:) It is all of you who make this event the wonderful one that it is. Thank you
…
This reading series is recorded for playback on CFRC 101.9fm’s “finding a
voice”. A newer feature to this event is a two section display table -
“words for free/barter/sale” (designed for poets to bring in their own work
(books, chapbooks, zines, cds)) and “the revolving free library” (a spot to
give away books, mags and the like - all long read and wishing to inspire
someone else in a “new” home).
This poetry series’ ambition - held in an inviting, warm, accepting and
acoustically sound “safe” space - is to offer a compassionate setting for
poets to come and share their diversity of their work, word and voice - and for others to relax, support and absorb. As I have mentioned before, the spoken word does indeed add another dimension to the written word that is, at times, almost magical.
Those participating may be reading their own or other’s poetry, singing
(with or even without an instrument), reading work done on a poet/poetic era or even original prose - and hey who knows. Time limit, determined by the number of people signing to read, usually falls in the 8 to 12 minute range.
This month’s reading, scheduled for Tuesday, February 1st, at the Artel
(corner of Queen and Sydenham Sts.), will run from 7:00 to 10:00pm, with a short intermission part way through and with limited food and beverage provided. It is also a free event, but donations are greatly appreciated and will be given directly to the Artel for providing their space and their assistance.
This is an open event so feel free to invite or bring friends as well. And
although the start time is 7pm, this is not a closed door event and anyone
is welcome to come in at any time during the reading. I will attempt to
accomodate poets arriving late and wishing to read, and if you are intending to read and know in advance that you will be late - let me know and I will make sure your name is included on the list for later in the evening
SIDE NOTE:
I would also like this reading series to be a resource in promoting other
artistic endeavors. If you have or know of a project, exhibit, space or
anything else related to the artistic community - it would be wonderful if
you could come promote it. But if you’re not able to attend - contact me
either here on fb or by way of email and I will promote it on your behalf at
the reading myself My email address is: bruce.kauffman@hotmail.com
This is going to be another really wonderful evening Already looking
forward to it:)
hope to see you there
