Critical Stage Co. and the ARTEL Present: WHERE do I START?
Directed by: Caroline Baillie
19–25 November 2006 8pm; 2pm matinee Nov 25
Where do I Start? is based on a powerful book of poetry written by a former Kingstonian, Roselyn Barclay, a former drug user who has beat the addiction and now manages a rough apartment building that houses the down and out of Vancouver’s east end. Caroline Baillie, Director (Copenhagen, Skriker) ‘was intrigued and moved to take up’ the challenge of staging what ‘were once emails sent to her father, demonstrating her strong connection to home after her journeys had taken her so far away in time and space’.
Critical Stage Co. addresses social issues in an honest straightforward manner and Where do I Start is no exception. Talia Acker brings reality to Roselyn’s first person account of her personal triumph, compassion and no nonsense treatment of those caught in the web of drugs. The lines are raw and riveting filled with lasting images, some profoundly disturbing. Percy Adler, an accomplished local jazz guitarist, has written and will perform his music while other actors stage vignettes. Where do I start presents a pure moment of human history - a piece of work without ego enhancing nuances… uncontaminated by creative intention.
The play will be staged at the Artel, 205 Sydenham St. and will run from Tue. Nov., 21 to Sat. 25th evenings at 8.00 with a matinee on the 25th at 2.00 PM. Tickets: $16.00 or pay what you can.
