Canadian Poster is an exhibition series featuring work by three Canadian silk-screen artists/designers who exemplify the reemergence of the hand-made and traditional technologies in poster making and the graphic arts.
“We’re living in a time when everything is advancing technologically, but most of it’s boring.”
- Will Munro, Toronto promoter, DJ and artist
Today’s computer-based design technology, characterized by its ubiquity and ease of use, has had the effect of enabling a new breed of hobbyist designer, but, more interestingly, it has created a backlash to what some understand as a cookie-cutter mode of art-making free of any sweat, toil or depth of character. The past 5 years has seen the maturing of indie rock culture and its DIY principles and the re-introduction of craftspeople who believe in the tangible, laboriously (and lovingly) made art object at the service of the small music event. They are passionate about thick ink, in multiple and colorful layers, printed by hand on really nice stock paper…The poster artists and designers featured in this exhibition are among the leaders of this renaissance and are some of the best examples of their kind in Canada, as evidenced by their prolific output and the influence they exert on the national and international scene.
